Stringy things

I’m just writing a note on a Mozart string quintet.  With the luxury of Spotify, I’m listening to the Juilliards playing it.  Boy, are they making heavy work.  This is exactly the sort of string playing that makes me feel oppressed.  It’s really in the string, with plenty of vibrato and leaden tempi.  Not recommended.

Thank goodness the period instrument revival happened, although I with more people would take notice of it.  A violinist played a Bach sonata movement at a friend’s wedding the other day.  She was very good, and clearly loved what she played; however, she had no sensitivity to style, and consequently applied too much vibrato.  It’s like slapping too much make-up on – it actually masks the subtlety of your features.  (Needless to say, she had too much make-up on…)
