Zelenka’s Lamentations

My usual annual Zelenka Lamentations obsession has started early this year – I may get two spells of it, as Easter is late.

The recording I have is the Chandos Baroque Players on Hyperion, now, since (sigh) it’s so old, out on their budget Helios label.  The singers are Michael George, Michael Chance and John Mark Ainsley.

It’s hard to imagine a better recording.  The playing and singing is exceptionally sensitive – and timeless, not at all dated. There are few ornaments, which is good because this really is an Urtext recording, one that you can listen to over and over and over again (I have, for years).

Zelenka’s Lamentations are morsels of perfection; this CD serves them up perfectly.
